The Ascalon Medals

MEDALS: This Year • 2020 • 2019 • 2018

The Ascalon Sword Festival with its premier event, the Arnold Fencing Classic takes medaling very seriously. We love the ceremony of it. In addition to the medal ceremony music composed for us by Dr. Paul Geraci, we like to make sure our medals are something to remember your Ascalon/Arnold experience by.

Introducing the 2022 Arnold Fencing Classic medals... It wouldn't be an Arnold medal if we didn't try to embed symbolism into the design. These 3.5" medals are going to weigh you down! You may not realize it, but every year has a theme. For 2022, the theme is royalty and legend. The medal represents that theme.

This is the 18th Arnold Fencing Classic.

The basic layout of the medal is based on King Arthur's legendary round table hanging in great hall of Winchester Castle. The table was made under the reign of Henry III of oak in the later 13th century. Later, Henry VIII ordered the painting and design work currently on the table.

Around the table in the places where the knights would sit we have placed the weapons fenced at the Arnold: foil, epee, saber, longsword, military saber, rapier, and lightsaber.

The text designates all weapons around the table as well as our principle disciplines of Olympic and Historical fencing.

The rose at the center is the rose of the Rose & Gold Foundation, the 501(c)3 that runs the Arnold and aims to improve lives through fencing.

Atop the rose sits another symbol of royalty, the Sovereign's Orb. Some only thing of it as the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. We won't argue with you. Either way, it is a sacred relic. The orb has 47 dots to represent every event fenced at the Arnold.

The reverse of the medal has the date and location of the tournament, more patterns fitting the theme, and-- most important--a place to designate what event you won!

The edge of the medal lists all the weapons fenced and broad groupings.
